Karthigai Adai is a special adai prepared as Neivedyam for Karthigai festival. It is usually prepared with black urad dal and black peppercorns as the main ingredients. This Adai is generally very thick in texture with lots of ghee or sesame oil making it crispy and served with butter.

Kartigai Adai Recipe
Ingredients -
Raw rice – 1 cup
Black Urad Dal – 1/3 rd cup
Chana Dal / Bengal Gram – 1/3 rd cup
Toor Dal / Split Pigeon peas – 1/3 rd cup
Green chilli – 1 no
Red Chilli – 1 no
Black Peppercorns – 10-12 nos
Asafoetida – 1/2 teaspoon
Salt - 1 tablespoon (or as per taste)
Water - As required
Curry Leaves – 2-3 sprigs
Coconut pieces – 2 Tablespoon
Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
Sesame Oil – as required
Method -
Wash and soak the dals and rice together for two hours.
Drain excess water and add to a mixer jar and grind coarsely in pulse mode. Add little water and again grind to a thick batter consistency (refer video).
Add some curry leaves, cumin seeds and chopped coconut pieces and keep aside the batter for 1 or 2 hours.
Keep an iron dosa tawa or non stick dosa tawa on medium flame. Once hot add a teaspoon of sesame oil and spread it on the tawa.
Now pour a ladle of the adai batter and spread it using the ladle thickly in circular shape. Drizzle generous spoonful of sesame oil on the adai. Let it cook and flip once the bottom part is cooked so as to enable the top portion to cook.
Remove once cooked. Make all adai in similar manner. Offer the neivedyam with butter.
